LockDown Browser

LockDown Browser is a browser that locks the testing environment in Brightspace. When students use LockDown Browser to access a quiz, they cannot print, copy, visit other websites, access other applications, or close a quiz until it has been submitted for grading.

The ratings are displayed in full screen and cannot be minimized, resized or closed until they have been submitted for rating.

Disabled commands: Printing, key combinations, screenshots, function keys and context menus.

Installation and configuration

To set up a quiz in Brightspace that requires students to use LockDown Browser,

  • Make sure the quiz has been deployed in the Brightspace course.

  • In the course, on the blue banner, click on evaluation, open the Quiz tab, you now have access to the LockDown Browser dashboard.

A list of installed quizzes is displayed, for example here:

  • 1st quiz: The instruction after the quiz name "Test LDB", Requires Respondus Lockdown Browser, requires that students use LockDown Browser.

    " Required" in green is then present on the right.

  • Second quiz: If there is no indication after the name, the quiz has not been configured with LockDown Browser. " Not Required" is then displayed on the right.

Activation

By checking "Require LockDown Browser for this exam ": you are enabling Lockdown Browser for this quiz.

  • The Password option allows access to the exam : only students with the password will be able to start the quiz.

Advanced Settings

5 possibles options:

  1. Require LockDown Browser to view post-exam feedback and results

    If comments and/or results are displayed after the exam, this option will require the use of LockDown Browser to display them.

  1. Lock students into the browser until exam is completed

    Students cannot exit LockDown Browser before submitting the exam for grading.

    In case of an emergency or technical problem, by checking this setting you have the option to enter a password that will allow you to close the browser. The student will then exit the browser lock, the exam will close, and it will not be submitted. The student will then have access to the exam again.

  1. Allow access to specific external web domains

    Allows a student to access a single external page or link

  1. Enable Calculator on the toolbar

    A standard or scientific calculator integrated into Lockdown Browser is present and can be used during the exam:

  1. Enable printing from the toolbar

    The student will be able to print what they see on the screen, which is not relevant here.

To verify that Lock Down Browser has been installed on the quiz, you can check in the menu that " Requires Respondus Lockdown Browser " appears after the quiz name and "Required" in green, on the right, as shown below:
